A woman has been taken to hospital with head injuries after being hit by a car.
The woman was struck by a car on the A259 Marine Parade near the junction with Rock Place.
The police were alerted around 5pm.
The woman was treated at the scene by paramedics and taken to hospital with head and leg injuries.
The A259 is closed as police investigate the crash.
David Thorpe, 54, manager of hotel A Room With A View, said he saw paramedics treating a woman lying in the road.
He said: “I first noticed something was wrong when I saw police lights.
“I saw lady on the floor being treated on the road, and they brought a stretcher out for her.
“I could hear she was in pain.
“It was shocking.”
Mohammed Ali, 20, from near Brighton Marina, had been visiting his friend at house just outside the crash scene, when he came across the crash.
He said: “I saw a bunch of police cars and I did not know what to make of it.
“I saw a shirt and a piece of clothing on the floor that had blood next to it.
“It was shocking to see.”
When The Argus visited the scene police had made a cordon stretching from the roundabout near The Sea Life centre and A259’s junction with Lower Rock Gardens.
The road closure caused major tailbacks in Old Steine and Kemp Town.
