Police hunt arsonist after Brighton flat fire

Police are appealing for witnesses

POLICE are hunting an arsonist after a small fire broke out in a Brighton flat in the early hours.

The fire was spotted at around 4.20am today in a flat in St Peter’s Street.

Officers believe a lit piece of paper was pushed through the letterbox.

The homeowner was woken up when he heard the smoke alarm ringing.

He managed to put the flames out without sustaining any injuries.

Police are now appealing for witnesses to come forward.

Detective Sergeant Joe Jardine, of Sussex Police, said: “Luckily the home owner woke up when he heard the smoke alarm and was able to quickly put the flames out without causing any injuries to himself.

“We are treating this as arson with intent and are investigating.

“We have not received any other reports of this nature.”
